Inertial Measurement Unit — Tactical to Navigation Grade

HMA IMU

The HMA IMU bridges the performance gap between tactical grade and navigation grade inertial measurement units in a small, lightweight, robust package — integrating three fiber optic gyros that exceed tactical grade performance with three high-accuracy accelerometers, built for GPS-denied and contested environments.

The Hardware

Three gyros, one modular package

The HMA IMU measures change in velocity and angle using a configurable synchronous data link control (SDLC) digital serial bus, with Gigabit Ethernet available as an option. Its modular design lets the fiber-optic gyros, circuit boards, and flexible connections fit into any custom form factor with minor design changes — offering the best value when designing new systems or upgrading existing platforms.

Background

75 years of inertial heritage

Aerosphere Power & Navigation (APN), located in Budd Lake, NJ, has been designing, developing, and producing inertial components, sensors, and navigation systems for Space, Ground, and Avionic applications for over 75 years. APN has been developing closed-loop Fiber Optic Gyros (FOGs) and Ring Laser Gyros (RLGs) since the early 1990s, producing and delivering IMU products with performance ranging from tactical to strategic grade.
